It is now nearly three years since we moved to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. We started the liver transplant program in March, 2013. We have done 115 liver transplants so far (98 living donor liver transplants and 17 deceased donor liver transplants). This is, by far, the largest number of liver transplants in Western India during this time span. We recently performed a re-transplant in a patient who had his first liver transplant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in 2010. His liver was damaged by some Ayurvedic medicine he took and he needed a second transplant.
We have also performed a dual lobe liver transplant in which two donors donated one lobe each for the same recipient.
We have successfully performed the first living donor liver transplant from an incompatible blood group.
Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery
In this short span of time, we have become a major center for liver and pancreatic resections. Operations such as extensive liver resections requiring vascular reconstruction and pancreatic resection with reconstruction of the portal vein and hepatic artery were not being performed in this part of the country. These patients were not being offered surgery and were being referred for palliative chemotherapy. Now they have a chance of curative surgery. Dr Vibha Varma recently performed an ALLPS (a rare two stage operation for extensive liver tumors). This may be the first such case in India.
Dr Barun Nath recently left our team and has joined Apollo Gleneagles Hospital in Kolkatta. This was for family reasons as his parents are close and his wife Arpita has also joined Apollo.
Dr Ashutosh Chauhan has joined the team. He did his Transplant Surgery Fellowship from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester. He was with Apollo Delhi and Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Center before joining us.
Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery Fellowship
We have started a fellowship program in liver transplant and HPB Surgery. We have four fellowship positions for training. Presently our fellows are Dr Shailesh Sable, Dr Swapnil and Dr Kapildev Yadav.
We have had fellows from abroad for training in living donor liver transplantation, most recently Dr Ahmed Zidan from Egypt.
Our book, Techniques of Liver Surgery, was launched at the annual conference of the Association of Surgeons of India. The book, published by Jaypee Brothers, Medical Publishers is a guide to liver surgery including liver transplantation.
