Dr Vibha Varma is Consultant, Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
Dr Vibha Varma did her MBBS from MKCG Medical College,Orissa, and accomplished her Masters in Surgery from Command Hospital, Air Force, Bangalore. She got interested in Gastro-intestinal Surgery and joined the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, to work with eminent GI Surgeon Dr. Samiran Nundy. Dr. Varma did her superspeciality training under his able guidance.
Dr Varma was fortunate to be a part of the pioneer team of Liver Transplantation program which started at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital(SGRH) in 2001. When Dr Varma finished her training at SGRH in October 2004, Liver transplant team was formed by Dr AS Soin, Dr Subash Gupta and Dr S Nundy. It took off as a Living related transplant program.
Immediately after finishing her superspeciality training, Dr. Varma was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad in 2005. It was in mid 2008, when Dr Varma felt that she was missing the Liver transplant program. She went on to get trained in Deceased donor liver transplantation from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham(UK), which has a busy unit performing about 150 transplants per year.
She also once again joined the Liver transplantation program at SGRH in 2009 when the team was performing about 140 transplants per year.
Apart from Hepatobiliary and Liver transplantation surgery, she is interested in academics and believes in sharing her knowledge with younger colleagues in the same field. Paper publication is another passion which has made her write papers in indexed journals with most of the surgeons with whom she worked both in India and abroad.
